Havana in time

Year 1543

-OCTOBER 31.- Another French corsair Jean Francois de la Roque de Roberval attacked Havana again with five ships. It disembarks several hundred arquebusiers in the San Lázaro cove. The Havana militias ambushed the invaders and made them re-embark. They caused more than 20 casualties.


Year 1545

- In the minutes of the Cabildo reference was made to the need for an aqueduct for Havana.

The Aqueduct of Havana, known as Zanja Real, was the first to be built in Cuba, promoted in 1545 by Juan de Rojas, the richest neighbor of the town, and the patronage of Governor Juanes Davila.

Year 1550

-AUGUST 29. A license was granted to open the Royal Ditch and bring the waters of the La Chorrera River (Almendares). The concern of the citizens for the water supply had been evident for several years before. The main branch of the Royal Ditch was completed in 1592


Year 1552

-JULIO 1.- The Havana City Council considered Juan Gómez as a teacher in the trade of barber and surgeon and prohibited another person from carrying out such an occupation in the locality.


Year 1553

-JULY. Tacit recognition was given to Havana as the capital of Cuba when Governor Gonzalo Pérez de Angulo was authorized to reside in this city. The governor had moved from Santiago de Cuba, a city that had suffered a strong pirate attack.
