The Doctor in Mathematical Sciences and member of the Council of State of the Republic of Cuba, Miriam Nicado García, was selected as the new Rector of the University of Havana, she met at the extraordinary session of the Expanded University Council of the UH.

The current Rector of the University of Informatics Sciences (UCI), has a history that endorses her specialty, since in addition to being a deputy to the National Assembly was Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Computing of the Central University of The Villas and teaching Vice-Rector.

Gustavo Cobreiro Suárez, who until now was the Rector of the University of Havana (UH) happens to perform other functions, informed the website of the teaching institution. The performance of Dr. Cobreiro, as Rector of the University of Havana for 9 years allowed to take this institution to the highest rungs of university excellence nationally and internationally, highlighted his most loyal followers in social networks.

In his Facebook channel the outstanding pedagogue expressed:

"Another task awaits me that I assume with the responsibility that it demands: it has been almost 16 years of working as Rector here (in the UH) and before in the Cujae. I thank all the compañeras and compañeros who have accompanied me in these years of crossing for his teachings and support, I am sure that under the leadership of Dr. Miriam Nicado, the UH will continue to be the Insigne Ship of Cuban Higher Education ".

In the extraordinary University Council were José Ramón Saborido Loidi, Minister of Higher Education (MES), Jorge Rodríguez Pérez and María Josefa Ruiz Mederos, Director and Specialist of the Management of Pictures of the MES respectively. As president of the commission and act of delivery of both rectors, Marta del Carmen Mesa, First Deputy Minister of the MES, serves.

It is the first time in 290 years of history of the University of Havana - founded on January 5, 1728 by the Dominican friars belonging to the Order of Preachers - that a woman assumes its rectory.

The University of Havana is the oldest educational institution in Cuba, and one of the first in America.
